A unique event took place at IALS during the week of May 14-18, 2018, entitled, “New Trends in the Common Law”.

For the first time senior judges from the Brazilian Federal and State courts, post graduate students from the University of Rio de Janeiro and academics and practitioners from the UK were brought together in a workshop exploring current and challenging themes the legal systems of both countries are facing, such as the taxation in the digital economy and in the BEPS (Base Erosion and Profit Shifting Project from OECD to tackle aggressive tax planning) era, the role of the judiciary in shaping the tax system, regulation and the rule of law, among other topics.

The event was created by IALS Visiting Research Fellow Marcus Lívio Gomes and included on the programme the Brazilian Supreme Court Minister Luis Fux as well as academics from many countries such as Austria, Netherlands, Italy and India. The main goal of this project is to build bridges among academics from Brazil, UK and European countries.
