We are pleased to announce the Library’s spring training programme for 2017.

Introduction to OSCOLA

OSCOLA stands for the Oxford University Standard for the Citation of Legal Authorities. In this session you will learn how to

  • cite your references using OSCOLA
  • avoid plagiarism
  • cite UK legislation & cases
  • cite foreign legal materials
  • cite books & journal articles
  • cite websites & online material
  • cite international law
  • cite a source that isn't covered by the OSCOLA rules
  • write your bibliography
  • keep your word count down by cross-referencing footnotes

The session is for postgraduate law students and academic researchers. It will take place in the IALS Council Chamber at the following times:

Finding legal journal articles for your essay, dissertation or thesis

This session will help you

  • get the most of the e-resources available at IALS Library
  • identify the most relevant databases for your research topic
  • find relevant journal articles for your research
  • find the full-text of an article if you only have a citation or abstract

The session is for postgraduate law students and academic researchers. It will take place in the IALS Council Chamber at the following times:

One-to-one advice

One-to-one advice appointments are available throughout the spring. A reference librarian can help you with

  • finding books, journal articles and other materials for a particular piece of research
  • advice on which database to use
  • constructing effective searches
  • identifying words and phrases for use in a search
  • narrowing your search results
  • finding foreign and international laws in print and online
  • citing resources using OSCOLA

or perhaps you just don’t know where to start with your research
