Biographical Note
William Lawrence Twining (b.1934) has had a long and distinguished career in law teaching and has been involved in many projects relating to legal education. He was educated at Charterhouse School, Brasenose College, Oxford and the University of Chicago. He has been Lecturer in Private Law at the University of Khartoum (1958-1961), Senior Lecturer in Law at University College, Dar-es-Salaam (1961-1965), Professor of Jurisprudence at the Queen's University, Belfast (1965-1972) and Professor of Law at the University of Warwick (1972-1982). From 1983-1996 he was the Quain Professor of Jurisprudence at University College London. Other activities have included membership of the Committee on Legal Education in Northern Ireland (1972-1974), presidency of the SPTL (1978-1979) and of the UK Society for Legal and Social Philosophy (1980-1983), chairmanship of the Bentham Committee (1982- ) and of the CLEA (1983-1993). He has edited the Law in Context series and the Jurists' series and has written and edited many publications concening legal education, including Legal Records in the Commonwealth (joint editor with E Varnden Quick), for the papers of which project see A.CLRP.

Twining Papers
In 1995-1997 Professor Twining deposited many of his papers in the Records of Legal Education Archives at IALS. The papers related to various projects concerned with legal education issues in which Professor Twining had been concerned, either in an official capacity as an officer of the organisation undertaking the project, or as a private, albeit involved, individual.
The papers therefore fall into two categories and have been classified accordingly:-
1. Papers of W L Twining in an official capacity
These papers include the following records which have been placed in the archive of the appropriate organisation in the Records of Legal Education Archives as follows:-

Professor Twining also passed the offical papers of the University of London's 1992-1993 LLM Review, of which he was Director, to the RLEA. These papers have since been transferred to the University of London Archives.
Professor Twining was Supervisor of the Commonwealth Legal Records Project, the administrative records of which were passed to IALS for safekeeping by the Co-ordinator on the project's completion in 1993. These papers have been placed in the RLEA and may be found at A.CLRP.
2. Papers of W L Twining in a private capacity
Access has not been agreed and preliminary file lists only have been made of these papers to date. Papers comprise the following:-
1) LLM papers, 1973-1993. One carton of non-official documents relating to the LLM Review and related issues.
ii) Law in Context, 1961-1991. 5 boxes of papers relating to Professor Twining's editorship of this series of law books, published by Weidenfield and Nicholson.
iii) Laws in London, 1984-1987. 2 boxes of material relating to preparation of the Sesquicentennial London Lecture by Professor Twining.
