IALS Library subscribes to databases covering a range of jurisdictions and many different types of publication:  legislation, cases, journal articles, journal indexes, books and more. For individual e-journals, see the Library Catalogue or the IALS List of Serials.

Onsite access in IALS Library (from our PCs or your laptop using IALS-Lib Wi-Fi) to all the databases is available to all current academic, staff and student members of IALS Library.

BAILII British and Irish Legal Information Institute (Open Access for All)

A sophisticated searchable database of online primary legal resources, updated daily and included among the Guardian's top 100 UK websites. It has made a huge contribution to freeing the law for students, educators and the general public. BAILII contains judgments, decisions, legal texts and commentaries of all kinds. In supporting all legal researchers and demonstrating its value to citizens, the service also reinforces the wider relevance of higher education and academic research.

Beck-online

The Beck-online resource offers access to full text German legislation, commentary and a small selection of full text journals. The following table gives details of the modules included in the IALS subscription. All the legislation is updated monthly. The content and interface and documents retrieved are all in German.

Cardiff Index to Legal Abbreviations (Open Access for All)

This index allows you to search for the meaning of abbreviations for English language legal publications (particularly law reports and law journals), from the British Isles, the Commonwealth and the United States, including those covering international and comparative law.

CaseBase (Australian materials via LexisNexis AU)

CaseBase is an index to Australian cases and journal articles, providing summaries but not the full text. It is part of LexisNexis Australia.

CaseTrack (UK cases)

CaseTrack is a full text, searchable database of transcripts/judgments of UK cases, provided by Smith Bernal Reporting - the official source of Court of Appeal and Administrative Court transcripts.

Celex European Union database (via Justis)

Celex (Communitatis Europeae Lex) is a large collection of European Union official documents, available at IALS as part of the Justis online service.

CommonLII Commonwealth Legal Information Institute (Open Access for All)

A very large legal information website offering free access to Commonwealth and common law on the internet. The service currently contains over 500 databases from 52 commonwealth and common law countries and territories. The ethos behind Commonlii springs from the 2002 Declaration on Free Access to Law, made at a meeting of legal information institutes from around the world.

Current Awareness for Legal Information Managers (caLIM) (Open Access for All)

A searchable database of current awareness information giving bibliographic details of newly published books and journal articles of specific interest to law library and legal information professionals.

Current Legal Research Topics (CLRT) (Open Access for All)

IALS open access database detailing the legal subjects of research in progress by students of law in the UK - aiding the identification of topical gaps, collaborative opportunities and expertise in supervision.

DART-Europe: e-theses portal (Open Access to All)

DART-Europe is a partnership of research libraries and library consortia who are working together to improve global access to European research theses.

DawsonERA

IALS has secured access to individual e-books from a variety of publishers. They can be accessed from the DawsonERA or from the individual book record on the Library Catalogue. After accepting the terms and conditions you can view the full text of the books online.

The Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC) is a cooperative of partners within the Caribbean and circum-Caribbean that provides users with access to Caribbean cultural, historical and research materials held in archives, libraries, and private collections.

Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) (Open Access for All)

The Directory of Open Access Journals was launched in 2003 at Lund University, Sweden, with 300 open access journals and today contains more than 10000 open access journals covering all areas of science, technology, medicine, social science and humanities.

Eagle-i Internet Portal for Law (Open Access for All)

Successor to the award-winning national Intute and SOSIG law gateways, provides description and evaluation of selected high quality and authentic legal information sources on the web. By agreement IALS has harvested and enhanced law records rescued from Intute – helping to ensure the continued availability of quality-driven facilities for the national legal research communities and encourage inclusion in skills training.

Early English Laws (Open Access for All)

Early English Laws is a project to publish online and in print new editions and translations of all English legal codes, edicts, and treatises produced up to the time of Magna Carta 1215

English Reports (via HeinOnline)

The English Reports (ER) is a multi-volume series containing reported decision of the English courts from 1220 to 1865. IALS Library has the printed volumes at GA2.G.1 and the whole series is on HeinOnline. ER includes many nominate reports, so called because they were published under the name of the compiler or editor, e.g. Colles, Shower, Freeman, Adolphus and Ellis, et al.

FLAG Foreign Law Guide (Open Access for All)

An award-winning database forming a collaborative Internet gateway to holdings of foreign, comparative and international law in UK national and university libraries, locating and describing the collections in libraries throughout the UK.

FLARE Index to Treaties (Open Access for All)

A searchable database of basic information on over 2,000 of the most significant multilateral treaties concluded from 1353 onwards and a number of significant bilateral treaties signed between 1353 and 1815, with links to full-text where available

FLARE Union List of Official Gazettes (Open Access for All)

A web database version of the Flare Union List of Foreign Official Government gazettes which provides bibliographic and source information (including details of print holdings in UK libraries and links to online versions) for foreign official government gazettes publishing primary and secondary legislation - offering guidance to pinpoint the relevant portions and sources of gazettes which can be voluminous and complex publications.

Foreign and International Law Resources databases (via HeinOnline)

The Foreign and International Law Resources Databases (FILRD) collection on HeinOnline consists of more than sixty yearbooks, law reports, journals and digests. Most of the content focuses on international law, but some foreign law titles are also available.

Halsbury's Laws of England is part of the Lexis Library subscription service. It is a comprehensive encyclopedia of the law of England and Wales.

HeinOnline

Hein Online is a substantial collection of legal research materials, primarily US-focused, but also encompassing international law and other jurisdictions. It includes a Law Journal Library covering more than 1200 titles; the English Reports; over 1,400 treatises on law and politics, dating from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries; United Nations treaties; the United States Reports and other US primary materials.

I-law: Maritime Law Resources

The i-law database is published by Informa. IALS Library subscribes to the Maritime and Commercial Law practice area, which provides cases, legislation, treaties, journals and books.

Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals (via HeinOnline)

Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals (IFLP) was first published by the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and is now produced by The American Association of Law Libraries at the University of California, Berkeley. It is part of the HeinOnline service. IFLP indexes journal articles and other publications; it covers the law of non-common law jurisdictions, international law and comparative law.

Index to Legal Periodicals

The Index to Legal Periodicals is an indexing database, containing bibliographic details of over 1,000 journals (877 excluding name changes), published in the US or UK, and concerning the Anglo-American legal system. Some titles from Canada, Australia and New Zealand are also covered. Whilst the database does not provide full-text access to any of the periodicals or articles, it is an invaluable source for performing a comprehensive search to see exactly what is available in terms of journal articles on particular subjects. Used in conjunction with other IALS Library electronic resources such as Hein Online, and our extensive hard copy holdings, ILP can be a valuable research resource. ILP also includes details of new books.

Index to periodical articles related to law (via HeinOnline)

Index to Periodical Articles Related to Law covers articles which are not covered by other indexes (such as Index to Legal Periodicals and Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals). Many of the articles indexed are from non-law or interdisciplinary periodicals, for example Drugs and Society, Law and History Review, Journal of African Business ; others are from newer law journals which are not yet indexed elsewhere.

ISI Web of Knowledge

ISI Web of Knowledge, produced by Thomson Reuters, indexes journals and conference proceedings in the fields of social sciences, arts, humanities and science. Its main distinguishing feature is that it shows how many times each article or paper has been cited and gives details of the citations.

JSTOR: Scholarly Journals online

Jstor is an multidisciplinary online archive of scholarly journals. It contains selected arts, humanities, social science, business, science and mathematics journals, published in the United States, United Kingdom and elsewhere. About 100 law journals are included. Some of the Jstor journals are available in full, some as abstracts only.

Le doctrinal

Le Doctrinal Plus offers a comprehensive collection of primary and secondary sources on the law of France. The interface and help files are in French throughout. Most of the content is in French, with some English-language publications indexed.

Max Planck encyclopedia of public international law

This database (MPEPIL) is an updated online edition of the printed Encyclopedia of public international law. It is produced by the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law and published by Oxford University Press.

Oxford Scholarship Online: Law

Oxford Scholarship Online (OSO) offers abstracts and full text of over 4000 books from Oxford University Press. IALS Library subscribes to the full text and abstracts of books in the law subject collection, and has access to the abstracts and tables of contents of OSO books in other disciplines. Over 200 full text books are available in the law subject collection, for teaching and research, representing a wide range of legal scholarship and research.

SAS-Space E-repository (Open Access for All)

IALS publishes material on SAS-Space, the School of Advanced Study's Open Access E-repository, for scholarly, research and archival purposes. Most materials are made available for use on a freely available, open access, non-commercial basis. Collections in the IALS Community contain work by Institute Staff, Students, Visiting Fellows and associated legal scholars and specialists.

SCC Online (Law of India)

SCC Online is a database of Indian cases and legislation, bills, bilateral treaties and other Indian material, together with cases from other Asian jurisdictions, Africa and elsewhere.

State Trials

The State Trials is a fully searchable, full-text CD-Rom database, of historical English cases relating to crimes against the State. Available onsite at IALS Library, the database has Folio Views software as its interface. Although the interface is somewhat old-fashioned in its functionality, it contains a wealth of important cases stretching back over centuries, including the treason trials of William Wallace and Anne Boleyn.

Statutes of the Realm (via HeinOnline)

The Statutes of the Realm were originally published between 1810 and 1825, as an authoritative collection of the statutes from 1235 to 1713. Hein Online presents the 11 volumes, of which volume 10 is an alphabetical index and volume 11 is a chronological index.

The UK Statutory Instruments database is part of the Justis online service. It consists of the original texts of UK statutory instruments, statutory rules and orders, with lists of amendments.

United Nations Law Collection (via HeinOnline)

HeinOnline’s United Nations Law Collection consists of law-related publications from the UN, including yearbooks, conference reports, the United Nations Treaty Series, the League of Nations Treaty Series, publications of the International Court of Justice and UNCITRAL materials.

Weekly Law Reports (via Westlaw UK)

The entire Weekly Law Reports (WLR) series is available on Westlaw UK. You can search for a case published in the Weekly Law Reports from the welcome screen. Alternatively, go to the Cases page and browse under "Law Reports and Transcripts" to find the whole series.

Westlaw UK is on online service providing legal materials relating to the the UK and the European Union. Australian, Canadian, US, international and other materials are also available, via the "International Materials" link from the "Services" menu on the UK homepage.

World Constitutions Illustrated (via HeinOnline)

World Constitutions Illustrated is a collection of constitutions, related commentary and bibliographies. It is a module of the HeinOnline database.

World Trials (via HeinOnline)

The World Trials Library is part of the HeinOnline database. It consists of digitised trial reports and court documents, together with commentary and biographies of famous lawyers. The collection ranges from ancient times (the trial of Socrates) up to the twentieth century. It includes series such as Howell's State Trials, American State Trials, Macdonnell's State Trials, Law Reports of Trials of War Criminals and Cox's Reports of Cases in Criminal Law.

Worldtradelaw.net

Worldtradelaw.net is a database of commentaries on the World Trade Organisation's dispute settlement cases, together with summaries of each case, tables, statistics and the full WTO reports. It also includes GATT Panel Reports, without complementary information.

ZETOC Electronic Table of Contents

Zetoc is a database of the table of contents of journals and conference proceedings held by the British Library. Its purpose is to enable researchers to keep up-to-date with new scholarship in their area of interest. (Summaries and full text are not available from Zetoc).
