ISI Web of Knowledge, produced by Thomson Reuters, indexes journals and conference proceedings in the fields of social sciences, arts, humanities and science. Its main distinguishing feature is that it shows how many times each article or paper has been cited and gives details of the citations.
Authorised users can use this service in the Library and offsite.
The default 'Web of Science' tab offers not just scientific indexes, but all of the following:
Social Sciences Citation Index (includes law, but only covers 144 law journals)
Arts & Humanities Citation Index
Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Social Science & Humanities
Science Citation Index Expanded Science
Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Science
A lot of the journals indexed are from the United States, but the database also covers a large number of journals published in the UK and many from elsewhere (see the Thomson Reuters journals lists). Abstracts may be available, but full-text materials are not provided.
Four different search facilities are offered: Search (the default), Author Search, Advanced Search and Cited Reference Search. In a Cited Reference Search, you enter the details of a specific article and the database will find articles citing that article, not the cited article itself; the other search facilities will find articles and say how many times each has been cited, with links to the citing articles.
Printing, saving and emailing
From the search results list, you can select records to print, email, or save to Endnote/EndnoteWeb.
