Although the IALS Library is intended to be a reference library first and foremost, limited borrowing is permitted to many readers including University of London LLM students.
Borrowing from the Main Collection
TWO books from the main collection may be borrowed at any time during the day for use outside the Library.
These books must be returned to the Enquiry Desk and cancelled by the Library staff before 7.45pm the next day (or by 5.15pm on Saturday if borrowed on Friday or by 7.45pm on Monday if borrowed on Saturday) or renewed up to a maximum of three times, reservations permitting, either online via the Library Catalogue or at the Issue & Enquiry Desk.
Please be sure that items being returned during Library opening hours are handed to a member of the Library staff at the Issue & Enquiry Desk, and always wait for your loans to be cancelled. Before 9.00am (10.00am Saturday), when the Library opens, books may be returned by placing them in the box provided on the ground floor. This box will be cleared at 9.00am Monday-Friday and at 10.00am on Saturday and is not available for use after that time. After 9.00am Monday - Friday and after 10.00am on Saturday readers are asked to bring their returned items to the Enquiry Desk on the 4th floor of the Library to be cancelled.
Procedure
To borrow a book for use outside the Library you must bring the book to the Issue & Enquiry Desk and hand it to the staff together with your Library card. The book will be issued to you and cleared for exit so that you can take it through the security system at the Library exit.

Borrowing from the Short Loan Collection
TWO books and FIVE serial parts and FIVE offprint items may be borrowed from the Short Loan Collection at one time.
Short Loan material must be returned by the time and date stamped inside the front of the volume. Please wait at the Enquiry Desk to ensure that all items you have borrowed are cancelled by the Library staff. The standard rolling Short Loan period is three hours long. e.g. a book borrowed at 9.50am is due back by 12.50pm. This period is reduced if an item has been booked by another reader and as the Library closing time approaches.
Books borrowed from the Short Loan Collection may be used outside the Library.
The books and offprints must be returned to the Issue & Enquiry Desk and cancelled by Library staff by the time and date stamped inside the front of the book. Books borrowed after 4.45pm (2.15pm Saturday) are normally due back the next day (or Monday if borrowed on a Saturday). No serials or looseleaf books may be borrowed from the Library.
Always note the date and time stamped on the label in the front of the item you have borrowed and be sure to return the item not later than the date and time due.
FINES are charged on the late return of all Short Loan books and serials to encourage their prompt return. The minimum fine per item is 50p. The fine increases if the item remains overdue for any subsequent loan period(s) at a rate of 50p per hour. Before 9.00am (10.00am Saturday), when the Library opens, Short Loan items may be returned by placing them in the box provided on the ground floor. This box will be cleared every day at 9.00am and is not available for use after that time. After 9.00am readers are asked to bring their returned items to the Issue & Enquiry Desk on the 4th floor of the Library to be cancelled.
