The prize was endowed by friends and former students of the late Professor Georg Schwarzenberger, a distinguished academic who taught international law at the University of London from 1938 to 1975. It is awarded to a student in one of the law schools of the University of London on the basis of outstanding performance in Public International Law.

This year’s winner, Johanna Mittrop, studied law in Berlin and Paris before undertaking the LLM in Transnational Law at King’s College London. During her studies, she was part of a two-year research group ‘Public International Law in Crisis?` held by the German Academic Scholarship Foundation. She is a graduate of the Humboldt European Law School and holds the First German State Exam in law (distinction), as well as a Master’s degree in French Public Law (Maître 1 Droit Public Général) from the Université Paris II, Panthéon Assass. In her research during the LLM, Johanna examined the underlying principles and foundations of international law, how it comes into existence, which actors play a role in it, and to what extent the effective enforcement of rights depends on factual circumstances. She was awarded the Dickson Poon School of Law Prize for the best student on the LLM in Transnational Law 2020/21.

Johanna is now studying for her PhD at the University of Leipzig, Germany. Her topic is, ‘The Public Nature of Elections’. The research examines the public nature of elections as a legal principle as well as from an interdisciplinary standpoint (applying democracy theory and performance theory). She is also a researcher and lecturer at the University of Leipzig.

The Director of the Institute, Professor Carl Stychin, explained:

‘The Institute is very proud to manage the Georg Schwarzenberger Prize on behalf of the University of London. Johanna Mittrop is an extremely deserving winner of this year’s Prize. Her academic achievements are simply outstanding. I have no doubt that Johanna is on her way to becoming a highly original and important academic voice in the field of international law. She rightly joins the prestigious list of winners of the Georg Schwarzenberger Prize’.
