IALS is very sorry to learn of the recent death of Johnny Veeder QC of Essex Court Chambers. An eminent and influential member of the arbitral community, Johnny had been an active participant in the life of the Institute for some years. He was Professor Derek Roebuck’s interlocutor at our ‘In Conversation with Derek Roebuck’ event in January 2017, and was instrumental to the success of our History of Arbitration research project. The project’s volume, ‘English Arbitration and Mediation in the Long Eighteenth Century’, could not have been published without Johnny’s help; we are deeply grateful for his involvement in the work of the Institute. His Chambers colleague Toby Landau QC has written a lovely tribute to Johnny; he will be greatly missed.
