Click, Collect, Return: Find Out How It Works

FAQs

How does the Click, Collect & Return service work?

The IALS Library Click, Collect & Return service will allow all library members to request books online from via the IALS Library catalogue at home and then come in to IALS to borrow the library’s physical books whilst the IALS Library reading rooms remain closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

You can order online any time, but orders will only be processed during our current normal working hours, Monday-Wednesday. You will receive a confirmation email from us to say that your books are ready to collect. Please do not come to IALS unless you have received the confirmation email.

The new book collection and return service will operate from the Ground Floor of the IALS building at 17 Russell Square WC1B 5DR. It will be available for 2 hours from 12.00 noon to 2.00pm, Monday to Wednesday each week.

You will need the email that confirms your order is ready for collection to pick up your books and your IALS Library card. You will not be allowed onsite if you do not have them.

You will be required to wear a face covering and follow health and safety guidance and social distancing when collecting and returning your books onsite. The health and safety of our members and staff is our top priority.

If you have any difficulty going up the stairs to the front door, please do let us know beforehand by emailing ials@sas.ac.uk so we can organise alternative arrangements for you.

When is the Click, Collect & Return service open?

The Click, Collect & Return service will be open Monday-Wednesday 12pm-2pm from Monday 27 July 2020 to collect books ordered in advance online and return books ONLY. You can order online any time but orders will only be processed during our current normal working hours, Monday-Wednesday. You will need the email that confirms your order is ready for collection to pick up your books and your IALS Library card. You will not be allowed onsite if you do not have them.

How long will it take in between ordering and collecting?

Click and Collect orders will take up to 4 days to process from receipt of your order (if requested Thursday as we won’t be onsite to process them until Monday). With current health and safety restrictions in place for staff and the need to quarantine books for 72 hours after they have been returned, your order could take up to 7 days to be ready for collection from when you place your order. You will need the email that confirms your order is ready for collection and your IALS Library card to be allowed onsite to collect/return your books.

What books are included in the click and collect service?

All currently loanable books in the Library are available to borrow through the IALS Library online catalogue as part of the Click, Collect & Return service.

Primary material and other reference-only collection items are not available as part of this service.

How many books can I order at once?

You can order up to 10 books via the Click, Collect and Return service. As 10 books is the maximum, if you already have books on loan you will need to return these before collecting any further books.

How long can I keep the Click and Collect ordered books for?

Books ordered through the Click, Collect & Return service are on loan to you for a 4 week loan period. They should also automatically renew until recalled by another reader. Please keep an eye on your Library account for renewals and recalls. All items MUST be returned by the expiry date shown on the back of your IALS Library card.

Where in the Library do I collect my Click & Collect order from?

Due to current restrictions in place to help reduce spread of coronavirus, the IALS Click, Collect & Return service point will operate out of the Council Chamber on the ground floor of the IALS building at 17 Russell Square. There will be no access to the Library or any other part of the IALS building.

When you arrive at IALS, please use the Main Entrance on Bedford Way. You will be asked to provide your name and contact details at the ground floor reception to comply with government Track and Trace requirements. A clearly marked one-way route will usher you through the ground floor. You will need a face mask or face covering to be allowed onsite. For your own safety and for the protection of our staff, please also ensure you follow the social distancing and health and safety guidance onsite and follow instructions by staff managing the service.

What do I need to bring with me when collecting my Click & Collect order?

You will need to bring the email confirming your order is ready for collection and your IALS Library card to the Click and Collect pick-up/drop off point on the ground floor of the IALS building. As you will need to leave your details at the main desk on arrival for possible Track and Trace requirements, please could you also try and bring your own pen with you to avoid sharing equipment.

Do I have to wear a face covering and/or gloves on site?

You are required to wear a face mask or face covering onsite when collecting/returning books for your own safety and to protect our staff. You will need to bring your own face covering with you as face coverings will not be provided. We also ask you to follow official guidance by regularly washing your hands with the hand sanitiser provided at the Main Desk on the ground floor. You are not required to wear gloves unless you wish to do so.

How long will I have to collect the books from when I receive confirmation?

Once you received a confirmation email that your requested books are ready to pick up, you will have 7 days to collect them before the order is cancelled and the books are returned to the library shelves. You can collect your requested books during our opening hours: Monday-Wednesday 12pm-2pm.

What will happen if I don't collect my order?

We will hold book reservations for 7 days. If the books are not collected within this period, the order will be cancelled and the books will be returned to the library shelves to allow other Library members to order them. A new order would need to be made if you missed the 7 day collection period.

Can I amend or cancel my Click and Collect order?

You can cancel requests by logging into your library account, selecting the book requested and then clicking on the cancel option on the page. You cannot add/delete books to your order once submitted. You would need to cancel the initial order and submit another order.

Can I place a click and collect order over the telephone?

All Click, Collect & Return orders should be submitted online via the IALS Library Catalogue. If you have a disability that means you can’t order online, we can arrange for a member of staff to call you and help you over the phone. Please email us on ials@sas.ac.uk with requests for this type of assistance.

Can a 3rd party collect/return my order on my behalf?

If you are unable to collect the books yourself, you can send a proxy to collect them, providing they have your email confirming the order is ready for collection and your IALS Library barcode number

Where in the IALS Building do I return the Click and Collect Items?

Books on loan can be returned in the Council Chamber on the ground floor of the IALS building between 12pm and 2pm, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Will the books be put in quarantine/treated in some way after return from each reader to help reduce the spread of coronavirus?

When books are returned by members, they will be put into a quarantine area for 72 hours before being returned to the shelves or loaned to other members. As a result, order and collection times will take longer than usual.  We ask that you do not clean IALS Library books yourself, as this may interfere with our specialist arrangements.

Are there any other services available?

Apart from the Click, Collect & Return service, no other library services are currently available onsite and the rest of the IALS building remains closed (including the toilets and café). We continue to be happy to help you virtually:

Is there anywhere else in the building/other UoL sites that I can use to read the books I order?

All study and social spaces in the IALS building, and also in Senate House are closed at this time. The Click, Collect and Return service is the only way to get access to the physical books for home study. The borrowed books need to be returned within the loan period stated on your order confirmation.

The University of London is working hard to implement changes to operations to make IALS compliant with the latest government and health advice to reduce the spread of coronavirus so that it can reopen later this year.

Where can I find updates and news about Library services?

News and updates on the services will be posted on our website and shared on social media @IALS_law.
