Click, Collect, Return: Find Out How It Works


How does the Click, Collect & Return service work? 

The IALS Library Click, Collect & Return service allows all library members to request books online from the IALS Library catalogue at home and then come in to the IALS to borrow the library’s books.

You can order online any time, but orders will only be processed during our current normal working hours of 9.00am to 11.00pm, Monday-Friday; 10.00am to 8.30pm on Saturday and 12.30m to 8.30pm on Sunday. You will receive a confirmation email from us to say that your books are ready to collect. Please do not come to collect the books unless you have received the confirmation email.

The IALS book collection and return service will operate from the Library Enquiries Desk on the 2nd floor of the IALS building at 17 Russell Square WC1B 5DR. It will be available from 9.00am to 7.45pm, Monday to Friday, and 10.00am to 5.15pm on Saturday each week.

You will need the email that confirms your order is ready for collection to pick up your books and your current IALS Library Card

Please wear a facemask when moving around IALS Library and maintain a 1m+ social distance. The health and safety of our members and staff is our top priority.

How long will it take in between ordering and collecting? 

Your order could take up to 3 days to be ready for collection from when you place your order but should ordinarily be ready to collect the next working day. Please wait for your email confirmation before coming to collect your items.

What books are included in the Click and Collect service?  

All currently loanable books in the Library are available to borrow through the IALS Library online catalogue as part of the Click, Collect & Return service.

Primary material and other reference-only collection items are not available as part of this service.

How many books can I order at once?  

You can order up to 4 books via the Click, Collect and Return service. As 4 books is the maximum, if you already have books on loan you will need to return these before collecting any further books. 

How long can I keep the Click and Collect ordered books for?

Books ordered through the Click, Collect & Return service are on loan to you for a 1 day period (1 week for students studying for an LLM at the Institute, and 4 weeks for IALS research students and University of London Staff). You can renew books by logging into your account via the library catalogue unless recalled by another reader. Please keep an eye on your Library account for renewals and recalls. All items MUST be returned by the expiry date shown on the back of your IALS Library card.

Where in the Library do I collect my Click and Collect order from? 

The IALS Click, Collect & Return service point operates from the Library Enquiry Desk on the 2nd floor of the IALS building at 17 Russell Square. 

For your own safety and for the protection of our staff, please also ensure you follow the social distancing and health and safety guidance onsite and follow instructions by staff managing the service. 

Do I have to wear a face covering and/or gloves on site?

While no longer mandatory, we would encourage you to wear a facemask when moving around IALS Library and maintain a 1m+ social distance  for your own safety and to protect our staff. You will need to bring your own face covering with you as face coverings will not be provided. We also ask you to follow official guidance by regularly washing your hands with the hand sanitiser provided at the Main Desk on the ground floor and by the main lifts on the 2nd floor. You are not required to wear gloves unless you wish to do so. 

Do not come to IALS if you or anyone in your household are displaying symptoms of COVID-19 (e.g. a high temperature, a new continuous cough, or a change to your sense of smell or taste) or if you have been contacted by the Government’s Test and Trace scheme. In these circumstances, you should self-isolate at home.

How long will I have to collect the books from when I receive confirmation?

Once you received a confirmation email that your requested books are ready to pick up, you will have 7 days to collect them before the order is cancelled and the books are returned to the library shelves. A new order would need to be made if you missed the 7 day collection period. 

Can I amend or cancel my Click and Collect order? 

You can cancel requests by logging into your library account, selecting the book requested and then clicking on the cancel option on the page. You cannot add/delete books to your order once submitted. You would need to cancel the initial order and submit another order.

Can I place a Click and Collect order over the telephone? 

All Click, Collect & Return orders should be submitted online via the IALS Library Catalogue. If you have a disability that means you can’t order online, we can arrange for a member of staff to call you and help you over the phone. Please email us on with requests for this type of assistance.

Can a 3rd party collect/return my order on my behalf? 

If you are unable to collect the books yourself, you can send a proxy to collect them, providing they have your confirmation email confirming the order is ready for collection and your IALS Library barcode number or your current IALS Library Card.

Where in the IALS Building do I return the Click and Collect Items? 

Books on loan can be returned to the Library Enquiry Desk or at the self-issue machine on the 2nd floor of the IALS building at 17 Russell Square during our current normal working hours of 9.00am to 11.00pm, Monday-Friday; 10.00am to 8.30pm on Saturday and 12.30 to 8.30pm on Sunday.

Are there any other services available? 

IALS Library is fully open. Members may visit and use the print collections, study desks and other facilities.
