The Director’s Seminar Series: The Human Rights Situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran: Reflections of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran

In his presentation, Professor Rehman would outline some of his key concerns.  These would include absence of access of his mandate to the country in order to monitor and report on the human rights situation and the lack of cooperation between his mandate and the Iranian authorities.  Issue of substantive concern would include the continuing arbitrary deprivation of life and the alarming and shocking implementation of the death penalty, the violations of due process and the right of fair trial, the situation of women and girls of Iran as well as the situation of minorities in the country.  Professor Rehman would also make a number of observations about the absence of accountability and continuing institutional impunity in the country.

Bio:

On 6 July 2018, Professor Javaid Rehman was appointed as the third Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran since the re-establishment of the mandate. Professor Javaid Rehman is a Professor of International Human Rights Law and Muslim Constitutionalism at Brunel University, London.  He teaches human rights law and Islamic law and continues to publish extensively in the subjects of international human rights law, Islamic law and constitutional practices of Muslim majority States.  Several of his published works have been translated into various languages. As a human rights lawyer, Professor Rehman has also provided legal opinions in various high-profile cases in a number of jurisdictions.
