Venue
Online Seminar (Zoom)
Description

This session will address a particular aspect of executive pay regulation; namely, the professional standards of executive remuneration consultants in providing remuneration committee advisory services. Love them or hate them, few would deny that executive remuneration consultants play a key role in remuneration committees' pay determination processes.

The provision of 'independent advice' is crucially dependent on the professional standards of executive remuneration consultants, including technical expertise and experience, together with ethical and training considerations. Allied to this is the self-regulatory regime applicable to member firms of the Remuneration Consultants Group.

Drawing upon 53 research interviews with protagonists on the UK remuneration scene, this webinar will argue that whereas particular aspects of executive remuneration regulation and practice may merit reform (with ‘short-termism’, incentive plan design and corporate behaviour/ethics perhaps being the most obvious candidates), the current regulation and practice applicable to executive remuneration consultants is broadly appropriate.

This webinar will be of interest both to those involved in the executive remuneration scene (such as, remuneration committee Chairs/members, regulators, institutional shareholder representative bodies, proxy advisors, executive remuneration consultants and in-house executive reward specialists), as well as academics working in the area concerned.

Bio

Dr Calvin Jackson is an Associate Research Fellow at IALS. He is currently writing a book on the professional standards of executive remuneration consultants, which is due to be published by Routledge in late 2022. Calvin is a former 'veteran' executive remuneration consultant, who advised remuneration committees (particularly in financial services) for 25 years. Since his retirement from that role he has returned to practising at the Bar. He has also completed an LLM (International Corporate Governance, Financial Regulation and Economic Law) and a PhD on the professional standards of executive remuneration consultants, both at IALS. Accordingly, Calvin combines the perspective of someone who had a ringside seat on the development of UK executive remuneration consultancy and remuneration committee practices with also having undertaken an extensive qualitative empirical research programme on the topic.

Speaker: Dr Calvin Jackson, IALS Research Fellow

Chair: Dr Mahmood Bagheri, Lecturer in Law (IALS)
