The Hamlyn Trust (created in 1948 by Miss Emma Hamlyn in memory of her father, a solicitor and Justice of the Peace in Torquay, Devon) aims to further knowledge and understanding of the law. The Trust is administered from the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London.

The Trust organises an annual series of public lectures by distinguished judges, legal practitioners, academic lawyers and other eminent speakers.

The Hamlyn Lectures are normally delivered annually in the autumn each year and the annual Hamlyn Seminar, which marks the publication of the lecture, is usually held in London, often at IALS,  in the following spring.
