Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals

Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals (IFLP) was first published by the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and is now produced by The American Association of Law Libraries at the University of California, Berkeley. It is part of the HeinOnline service.  IFLP indexes journal articles and other publications; it covers the law of non-common law jurisdictions, international law and comparative law.

IFLP is available onsite to all Library users. Remote access is available to IALS and SAS staff, fellows and students, University of London law staff and students (including LLM students) via a current IALS Library card or SAScard.  Remote access via Athens/Shibboleth is arranged by each University of London law department and ULIP for their registered law staff and students.

More than 500 law journals are indexed, plus essay collections, conference proceedings and book reviews. For a list of all the titles covered, see the University of California, Berkeley website.

The subjects covered by IFLP are international law, comparative law and the law of non-common law jurisdictions. It therefore includes little on the law of the US, the UK or other common law countries. (For an index to US legal journals see Index to Legal Periodicals; for an index to UK legal journals, see Westlaw UK).

IFLP goes back to 1985, but the date range covered varies from journal to journal. The database is updated quarterly. It does not provide any full-text materials.

The Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Library subscribes to many, but not all, of the journals covered by the IFLP.

The articles indexed by IFLP are in many different languages. However, English terms can be used to search across all languages, because each article has been given English-language subject headings.

The default IFLP search screen offers searches by keyword, author or article title; to change these options - to Subject Heading or other criteria - click on the down-arrow adjacent to one of the search boxes.  To limit your search by date, use the Year boxes.

To browse IFLP by subject, click on the 'Subject' button;  to browse by jurisdiction, click on the 'Country Subject' button.
