Hein Online is a substantial collection of legal research materials, primarily US-focused, but also encompassing international law and other jurisdictions. It includes a Law Journal Library covering more than 1200 titles; the English Reports; over 1,400 treatises on law and politics, dating from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries; United Nations treaties; the United States Reports and other US primary materials.
Several of the Hein collections offer Hein's ScholarCheck facility. This shows how many articles cite a given article and provides links to cited legislation, case law and commentary.
Onsite access through the IALS account is available in IALS, SAS, SHL and University of London law departments.
Remote access is available to IALS and SAS staff, fellows and students, University of London law staff and students (including LLM students) via a current IALS Library card or SAScard. Remote access via Athens/Shibboleth is arranged by each University of London law department and ULIP for their registered law staff and students.
From the main screen, choose one of the collections, or “subscribed libraries”, e.g. Law Journal Library, Foreign and International Law Resources, or United Nations Law Collection. A list of all the titles in the selected library will be displayed. Click on a title, e.g. Scandinavian Studies in Law, then a volume number, and so on. A table of contents for the selected volume will be then be displayed to the left, with links to each article. The document itself will appear on the right, with arrow buttons and a drop-down menu of page numbers at the top, with which to move from page to page.
Once you have chosen a collection, use the Search tab or Citation Navigator tab to display the various search options (in some collections, however, search facilities appear in the middle of the screen). Use Field Search if you want to search for articles by author, title, or date; you can also use Field Search to search the English Reports by citation. Citation Navigator enables you to enter a volume, title and page number. An Advanced Search facility is also available.
Using Hein Online from the IALS Library Catalogue
If you search for a journal title on the Library Catalogue to see if we have it in print, you will also get a link to the electronic version in Hein Online, if that journal is included in Hein. For example, if you search for the Stanford Law Review on the catalogue, you will see that we have the hard copy up to the most recently published issue and there will also be a link to it on Hein, where it is available up to the pre-current volume.
Printing / Downloading
