The UK Statutes database is part of the JustisOne.com online service. It consists of the original texts of UK statutes from 1235 to date, with lists of amendments.
Justis is available onsite at IALS to all members of the Library. Remote access is available to IALS staff, fellows and students, other academic members of the Library and academic members of Senate House Library (see Offsite Access to IALS Electronic Resources) .
When logging in, you will come to a Justis Sign In screen saying "You have been automatically authenticated". There is no need to enter an ID and password here - just click on the Continue button.
The UK Statutes database provides the full text of UK public and general acts and measures from 1235 onwards:
Acts of the Parliament of England, 1235 to 1706
Acts of the UK Parliament, 1707 -
Church Assembly and General Synod Measures, 1920 -
Acts of the Scottish Parliament, 1999 -
Acts of the Northern Ireland Assembly, 2000 -
Measures of the National Assembly for Wales, 2008 -
Each act or measure is presented as originally passed, with a separate list of amendments. Repealed acts are included in the database.
The JustisOne home page offers a Quick search facility which searches across all the JustisOne databases to which IALS subscribes, not just UK Statutes. Suggestions and tips are available on this screen.
For a detailed search template, click on Legislation. The default is to search both statutes and statutory instruments (SIs). To restrict your search to statutes only, click on Data Sources and deselect SIs. For search examples and help, click on the i buttons.
You can browse statutes by year and title. Click on the Index and Contents button towards the top right-hand side of the screen, then use the + signs to open the list of acts by year. Tick the year you require, then click on Show Results at the top of the screen.
Tip: to sort the results A-Z by title, click on the Title and Subject column heading (on the results screen).
On the Results screen, you can scroll through a brief display of all the results, or choose particular documents to display in full. To sort the results, click on one of the column headings on the results screen, e.g. Year.
Every act is available as a single document; pdf versions are also available, if you click on the red PDF tab on the full-text screen. Each individual section of an act is also available as a separate document.
A search can be narrowed down further by entering additional terms in the Filter Results Profiles box, on the Results screen.
For information about the UK Statutes database, use the drop-down arrow next to UK Acts (on the Legislation screen), then click on the ? link. Tutorials, details of technical requirements and other guidance are available from any point in the database via the Help and Information link (top-right). The Legislation screen has i buttons which give more information about a particular field, with search examples.
