Comparative and International Legal Aid Issues

The International Legal Aid Group met in June 2005 in Killarney, Ireland, bringing together academics and legal aid funders from across the world. Professor Sherr presented a paper arising out of both his Peer Review and Public Defender work, and other papers were given by Professor Cape and Professor Alan Paterson of the University of Strathclyde, both of which built on prior work carried out by or with the Institute. Arising out of this conference, further meetings with Chilean and other South American legal aid researchers have been organised. A research meeting was held in Wellington, New Zealand, with the researchers involved in a Public Defender Pilot project in Auckland, and continuing contacts have been reinforced with researchers in Canada and South Africa.

Professor Sherr was invited to attend the Australasian Law Teachers Association conference at the University of Waikato, New Zealand in July 2005, where he spoke on Legal Education - Where do we begin?. Starting Again. Again. This was then followed by a lecture tour of New Zealand where he spoke at the University of Victoria, Wellington, the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, and the University of Auckland. His lecture titles included The Future of Legal Aid, The Future of Legal Education and Do Lawyers do any Good?
