Scanning Service: Find Out How It Works

FAQs

How does the IALS Library Scanning Service work?

The Scanning service will be open from Monday 27 July 2020 and will allow SAS students to place online requests for scans of journal articles and book chapters from the printed volumes on the IALS Library shelves (and which are unavailable from the library’s e-resources). SAS students can order online any time at ials@sas.ac.uk, but orders will only be processed during our current normal working hours, Monday-Wednesday.

Who can use the IALS Library Scanning service?

At present, the scanning service is available to all currently registered SAS PhD and Masters’ students.

How many items can I order?

To ensure maximum access to the service, you are currently limited to one request for one item a week. The request must comply with UK copyright regulations, i.e. one chapter, or 10%, of a book, or one article from a journal. IALS will not supply items which breach copyright restrictions, and it will not be possible to order multiple sections of a single work over a period of time.

How long will it take in between ordering and collecting?

Scanning orders may take up to 7 days to process from receipt of your order, although it is hoped that they will be delivered more speedily. With current health and safety restrictions in place for staff and the need to quarantine books for 72 hours after they have been returned from our Click, Collect & Return service, there may be a delay before we can begin to process your scanning order.

What items are available from the IALS Library Scanning service?

SAS students will be able to request scans of articles from journals, scans of chapters from books, scans of individual law reports and scans of sections from legislation from the IALS printed collections. We will not be able to scan damaged, fragile or antique items. Please also note that, due to staffing and operations limitations, IALS will not be able to provide a remote reference service, and will only be able to scan specific, known items. All scanned items will comply with current UK copyright regulations.

How do I request an item from the IALS Library Scanning service?

Please email your request to ials@sas.ac.uk and enter ‘IALS Scan request’ in the subject field. Your email should include your full name and SAScard number, and details of the item you require. For journal articles, please include name of author and article title, the name of the journal in which it is located and the volume/issue number in which it appears. For book chapters, please provide details of both the specific chapter you require and the book in which it appears. For law reports please provide the print citation.

How do I receive my Scan?

Your scan will be sent to you in PDF format to the email address from which you originally requested the item.

Can I amend or cancel my Scanning order?

You can cancel your scan request at any time before delivery. Bearing in mind that the delay between request and receipt is not fixed, if you do decide you no longer require an item please try to let us know sooner than later. Once we have sent an item to you, you will no longer be able to request anything else from the same book, journal issue or law report volume.

Can I place a Scanning order over the telephone?

All Scanning orders must be submitted by email to ials@sas.ac.uk. If you have a disability that means you cannot order online, a member of staff can help you over the phone – please call us on 020 7862 5834 between 12pm and 2pm, Monday-Wednesday.

Are there any other services available?

IALS Library is also offering a Click, Collect & Return service Monday-Wednesday 12pm-2pm from Monday 27 July 2020. This enables readers to collect books ordered in advance online and return books only. Apart from this, no other library services are currently available onsite and the rest of the IALS building remains closed (including the toilets and café).
